Flight Instructor Rating

Introduction

An FI(A) (Flight Instructor Rating) is a rating to attach onto a pilot’s licence to allow them to teach towards a LAPL or PPL. To obtain an FI rating you must undergo an approved course with an approved training organisation such as ourselves. Aviation South West are approved by the UK CAA and Transport Malta (EASA).

 

Pre-Requisites

Before starting this course we require:

  • At least 18 years of age

  • Hold at least the licence and, where relevant, the rating for which flight instruction is to be given

  • ICAO level 4 or higher

  • Be entitled to act as PIC on the aircraft during such flight instruction

  • Have received at least 10 hours of instrument flight instruction on the appropriate aircraft category, of which not more than 5 hours may be instrument ground time in an FSTD

  • Have completed 20 hours of VFR cross-country flight on the appropriate aircraft category as PIC

  • Hold at least a CPL(A) or

  • Hold at least a PPL(A) and have

    • Meet the requirements for CPL theoretical knowledge, except for an FI(A) providing training for a LAPL only

    • Completed at least 200 hours of flight time on aeroplanes or TMGs, of which 150 hours as PIC

  • Have completed at least 30 hours on single-engine piston powered aeroplanes, of which at least 5 hours shall have been completed during the last 6 months preceding the pre-entry flight test set out in FCL.930.FI(A)

  • Relevant medical class for the relevant authority’s licence requirement

 

The Course

The approved course has minimum set requirements as set out by law but may require going beyond these to meet standards to safety pass the skills test assessments. The minimum course criteria before your skills test are:

  • 125 hours of ground instruction

  • 30 hours of flight instruction

    • Of which 25 hours shall be dual instruction

      • Of which 5 hours may be conducted in an FFS, an FNPT I or II or an FTD 2/3
