Instrument Rating (SE & ME)

Introduction

An SP IR (Single Pilot Instrument Rating) is a rating to attach to a pilot’s licence to allow them to fly in a single or multi-engine aircraft in instrument meteorological conditions as pilot in command (PIC). To obtain an SEIR or an MEIR you must undergo an approved course with an approved training organisation such as ourselves. Aviation South West are approved by the UK CAA and Transport Malta (EASA).

 

Pre-Requisites

Before starting an IR course we require:

  • You are fit and able to gain a minimum Class 2 medical

  • You have the ability to speak and read the English Language at an ICAO Level 4 (Operational) standard. An English Language assessment can be done at an approved provider

  • Passes in the 7 Instrument CPL or ATPL theoretical knowledge exams with the relevant authority within the last 36 months on completion of the course

  • Minimum of a PPL

  • 50 hours cross country PIC time

    • Of which 10 hours PIC as cross country must be in aeroplanes

  • Night Rating, should you wish to fly instrument at night

  • (Optional) CPL or BIFM certificate to reduce course to 40 hours for SEIR or 45 hours for MEIR

  • In the case for a Multi-Engine IR, hold or have completed MEP training

Single Engine IR

The Course

The approved course has minimum set requirements as set out by law but may require going beyond these to meet standards to safety pass the skills test assessments. The minimum course criteria before your skills test are:

  • 50 hours flight time in a single engine aircraft

    • May be reduced to 40 hours if a CPL or BIFM certificate held

  • Meet standards to pass the Skills Test check flight

Multi Engine IR

The Course

The approved course has minimum set requirements as set out by law but may require going beyond these to meet standards to safety pass the skills test assessments. The minimum course criteria before your skills test are:

  • 55 hours of flight training including

    • May be reduced to 45 hours if a CPL or BIFM certificate held

    • 30 / 40 hours simulator training

    • 15 hours flight time in a multi engine aircraft

  • Meet standards to pass the Skills Test check flight
