Private Pilot Licence

Introduction

A PPL (Private Pilot Licence) is the basic qualification for a pilot to be able to fly as pilot-in-command (PIC) and carry passengers. To obtain a PPL you must undergo an approved course with an approved training organisation such as ourselves. Aviation South West are approved by the UK CAA and Transport Malta (EASA).

 

Pre-Requisites

Before starting this course we require:

  • At least 16 years of age for solo and 17 years of age for licence issue

  • You are fit and able to gain a minimum Class 2 medical. This is advised before you start the course as you will not be able to meet solo requirements without one

  • You have the ability to speak and read the English Language at an ICAO Level 4 (Operational) standard. An English Language assessment can be done at an approved provider

 

The Course

The approved course has minimum set requirements as set out by law but may require going beyond these to meet standards to safety pass the skills test assessments. The minimum course criteria before your skills test are:

  • 45 hours total time

    • Of which 25 hours dual

    • 10 hours solo / PIC, including 5 hours solo cross country with at least one qualifying 150nm cross country with 2 land aways

  • 9 ground theory exam passes in a variety of aviation subjects. These are: Air Law, Operational Procedures, Communications, Human Performance & Limitations, Meteorology, Navigation, Aircraft General Knowledge, Principles of Flight and Flight Planning & Performance

  • Pass a Flight Radio Telephony Operator Licence (FRTOL) practical test

  • Meet standards to pass the Skills Test check flight
